What is your poster about?
This poster is about the impact of a rheumatological approach, based on combination treatment with pulse steroid and baricitinib, on mortality and inflammatory response in severe COVID-19 patients requiring intensive care unit support.
Why did you decide to investigate this topic?
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, I was directly involved in designing immunomodulatory treatment protocols for severe COVID-19 patients. Our group has noticed strong similarities between severe hyperinflammatory COVID-19 pneumonia and some rapidly progressive interstitial lung disease secondary to systemic autoimmune diseases.
What are you working on next related to this research?
I established a strong multidisciplinary network with the anesthesiologists of our geographical area in order to improve the outcome of patients with severe COVID-19 as well as of patients with the most severe type of rheumatic diseases.
What excites you most about your work?
This has been a great chance to apply the “rheumatological” thinking approach to the intensive care setting, with a remarkable gain in terms of knowledge growth and, most importantly, of lives saved.
